Outremont has a reputation as a peaceful and highly residential neighborhood known for the beauty of its imposing old homes and characterized by plush greenery, numerous picturesque parks, and an exceptional quality of life.
History
Originally known as Côte Sainte-Catherine, it came to be named Outremont after a stately residence that was built by Louis-Tancrède Bouthillier in 1833 which was named Outre-Mont. In 1875, the new Village of Outremont was named for this house which still exists today on McDougall Street.
Geography
Outremont is located north of downtown, unfolding graciously along the northern slopes of Mount Royal. Its name means "beyond the mountain" even though it encompasses Murray Hill, one of the three peaks that comprise Mount Royal.
The borough is bounded to the northwest by Mount Royal, to the northeast by Parc-Extension and Rosemont, to the east by Le Plateau-Mont-Royal and the Mile End district, to the south by Ville-Marie, and to the west by Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. The Mount Royal Cemetery is located in the south eastern tip of the borough.
Demographics
Outremont has a population of over 25,000 in an area of roughly four square kilometers, making it the smallest of Montreal's boroughs. The neighbourhood has traditionally been inhabited largely by Francophones, but also has a sizable Hasidic Jewish community.
Cityscape
Major thoroughfares include Van Horne Avenue and Côte Sainte Catherine Road, with Bernard and Laurier Streets filled with sophisticated restaurants, cafes, and small shops. Among the attractions in the mainly residential community are the Mount Royal Cemetery, the Salle Claude-Champagne, the Outremont Theatre, and the Saint-Grégoire-l'Illuminateur Armenian Cathedral.
Highlights
A large part of Outremont's territory is taken up by the Mount Royal Cemetery, one of the most beautiful garden cemeteries in North America – worth a visit for its footpaths, natural woodlands, and flowery islets.
Transportation
Outremont is served by the Outremont and Édouard-Montpetit stations on the blue line of the Montreal Metro.

Schools include part of the Université de Montréal campus, École polytechnique de Montréal, HEC Montréal, and Collège Stanislas.
