Côte Saint-Luc, situated in Montreal's West End, is a residential neighborhood with a history for innovation when it comes to the welfare of citizens in its community.
History
Côte-Saint-Luc was originally settled in the 18th century and remained almost exclusively a farming community for 200 years up until the middle of the 20th century.
Côte Saint-Luc is named after Saint Luke whom Saint John saw in the form of a winged bull during his apocalyptic vision. "Côte", French for "slope", most likely referred to the slope to Coteau Saint-Pierre, today’s Nôtre-Dame-de-Grâce.
Geography
Côte Saint-Luc forms an enclave within Montreal located at a railroad junction bordering Hampstead to its east and Montreal West to the south.
Demographics
Côte Saint-Luc is a multicultural community with over 40,000 inhabitants and is now one of the biggest independent cities on the Island of Montreal. The city has a large Jewish population with a substantial Italian community as well.
Cityscape
The neighborhood consists mostly of single-family dwellings with the exception of many luxury apartment buildings and condominiums clustered along Cavendish Boulevard.
Highlights
Côte Saint-Luc has been a leader in health and safety issues. It is the only municipality in Quebec to offer a volunteer first responder service that arrives on the scene within minutes to stabilize the patient before the ambulance gets there to transport the patient to hospital.
Côte Saint-Luc also has a full time Public Security Department to enforce municipal by-laws and a volunteer Citizen on Patrol program.
Transportation
Although Côte Saint-Luc is served by several bus lines, accessibility will be improved with the proposed Cavendish Blvd. extension that will provide a link to the Borough of Saint-Laurent as well as Décarie Blvd.
Schools
Côte Saint-Luc offers many private Hebrew schools from pre-school through high school, as well as several public schools including Merton Elementary School and John Grant High School.
Services
The city is well known for its many parks and recreational facilities including the Eleanor London Côte Saint-Luc Public Library.
